ZIMRA K9 indomitable in crime detection at border posts
By Zimra News Desk

United States Senator George Vest once said: “The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.”
Those words ring true for the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) K9 Unit, whose loyal sniffer dogs continue to play a crucial role in combating smuggling at key ports of entry.
On August 26, 2021, Carlos, a ZIMRA sniffer dog handled by K9 Officer Pesani Mungazi, helped intercept illicit goods concealed in a Proliner bus at Beitbridge Border Post. Working alongside colleagues Simbarashe Chiwiro, Edmore Muronzereyi, and Tapiwa Machisa, Carlos signalled the presence of suspect cargo inside the trailer.
“Carlos made some indications at five different points around the trailer... prompting a full physical examination,”
said K9 Unit Supervisor Felix Marizani.
The search uncovered 25 boxes of BronCleer Syrup (1250 x 100ml bottles), valued at US$7,500, and clearly labelled for intended recipients — a sign of a coordinated smuggling operation.
In a similar success, K9 Officer Happy Chadambuka recovered three bales of second-hand clothes (valued near US$6,000) and 36 bags of dagga (worth US$28,822.67) at Forbes Border Post in September 2021.
These incidents underscore ZIMRA’s persistent fight against smuggling, with K9 units playing a frontline role in protecting national revenue.
