Beitbridge Border upgrade takes shape

The ongoing US$300 million Beitbridge Border Post upgrade is progressing steadily, with Phase One — the freight terminal — expected to be operational by end of September 2021. This section will primarily serve commercial vehicles entering and exiting Zimbabwe, setting the stage for a more streamlined trade route.

On 26 February 2021, Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, accompanied by Acting ZIMRA Commissioner General Mr. Rameck Masaire, toured the site alongside other senior officials and stakeholders from immigration, VID, and regional authorities. The tour showcased progress across various construction zones, with several areas already excavated or structurally developed.

“This is a welcome move which shows the contractor’s commitment to a successful public-private partnership between the Zimbabwe government and ZimBorders,” said Minister Ncube.

The full border post upgrade is set for completion by Q4 of 2022 and is expected to:

Improve cargo movement efficiency

Reduce congestion and turnaround times

Boost Zimbabwe’s rating on the Ease of Doing Business Index

Transform Beitbridge town into a modern trade hub
